Moderate five-magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Pakistan
A moderate five magnitude earthquake struck eastern Pakistan Wednesday, with tremors felt in several cities, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The ground shook in the western suburbs of Chicago on Nov. 4 following a blast at a local quarry but this blast, several seconds after the first, registered a 3.2 magnitude and was felt as far away as Kenosha Wisconsin. According to ABC Local News on Nov. 5, officials are saying the quarry blast and the almost immediate earthquake are unrelated events. The blast occurred just past 12:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Surveyors are checking to make sure that the Washington Monument is still 555 feet, 5 1/8 inches tall. The survey is being conducted by the National Geodetic Survey and is the first of its kind since 1999. Surveyors can only access the peak of the monument to check the height when it’s covered in scaffolding. The monument is undergoing repairs after it was damaged during a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in August 2011.
According to the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, the vibration would have felt like passing heavy trucks. Stopped cars would rock, hanging objects to swing, windows, dishes and doors to rattle, glasses to clink and wooden walls and frames creak. Authorities grounded ferry services and called in fishing boats on Thursday as an approaching super typhoon, the most powerful to hit the western Pacific this year, gained strength on a path set for the central Philippines. With centre winds of 215 kph (133 mph) and gusts of up to 250 kph, typhoon Haiyan, rated a category-five storm, the most severe, was moving west northwest at 30 kph in the Pacific Ocean. It was expected to make landfall at mid-day on Friday between the central islands of Samar and Leyte.
